CAMILLA HORN, who has died aged 37, was a talented bloodstock photographer and breeder for the Flat. During these two years she extended her knowledge of the thoroughbred and coupled this with an increasing interest in photography.

Having received invaluable instruction from the photographer Chris Chapman, Camilla Russell was asked by Cheveley Park Stud to do their annual calendars and other commissions swiftly followed.

Some of her attempts at surrealism in equine photography were criticised at the time, but since then the technique has becoming increasingly admired and emulated. Her photograph of Polar Falcon was chosen for a cover of Pacemaker.

Camilla Russell hunted with the Old Berks and the Teme Valley. She also successfully coursed her whippets, winning the Laguna Trophy. In at Eastleach she won a final that Garry Kelly, the legendary Slipper of the Waterloo Cup, declared the most dramatic course he had ever seen.

The bitch's brother went to Franca Vittadini in Italy. After her marriage she moved to Shropshire and set about breeding from a small number of broodmares. Their progeny were beginning to show the skill which derived from her knowledge of bloodlines and her hull options trading to lesser known stallions.

Camilla Horn's homebred, Tragic Herringswell bloodstock centre newmarket by Tragic Role out of Miss Mirror, whose grandsire was Nureyev, won nine races in Sweden. La Notte, by Factual, was bought by Leslie Harrison at Plantation and trained by Willie Jarvis. She won a race at Kempton and was placed three times.

Currently her mares are in foal to Averti and Polar Prince with anticipated bookings to be covered by Keen and Ben Bien later this year. She is survived by her husband Nicholas Horn, whom she married in she delayed the wedding so that she could complete the Flat racing season and their two daughters.
