I transferred from first year science into first year engineering to pursue chemical engineering, but after APSC I want to go further into coding and software.

I know ECE has a software option, but I heard that it's very weak compared to CPSC. Hence, I'm considering transferring back into science to study CPSC, but the drawback is I will be a year behind. Is CPSC worth taking that year behind? Everyone says this but, honestly, in my experience, its not really that important.

You will live and die on your technical interview. In the end the employer doesn't care if you did computer science or engineering.

However, engineers tend to favour other engineers so it could end up helping you. The computer engineering option is definitely not weak. It's very hands on and covers the core concepts.

You'll be forced to take courses on hardware and such but it helps enforce your understanding of a computer as a whole. After third year, you'll be able to specialize a lot more in either software or hardware and you'll also have lots of opportunity for electives. A lot of students take CPSC electives so you really don't miss much.

The co-op program is also much stronger in engineering. The program consists of doing a minimum of 16 months of coop which contributes immensely in your overall education and also helps you find a job later.

Companies love people with previous work experience. In the end, it's about the amount of work you put into the program. Finishing CPEN or CPSC doesn't guarantee anything after graduation. Putting in hard work does.

Is it a weaker program? I'm in the same place as you, I transferred from science to first year engineering. I'm in CS and I can tell you this is false. Neither program is better than the other. Rather, the two programs are different. SE in Eng is going to be lower level and you'll have less freedom in terms customizing your curriculum. Cs will be higher level and you'll have more freedom in your curriculum. Ultimately, your best learning in software will come from what you do on your own time.

Does anyone have any experience with SE majors and jobs? People are desperate right now for people with coding skills.

Either CS or Eng will be fine. One reason that not many CS students take ECE courses as electives is that students in the Faculty of Science have to take a certain number of courses from the Faculty.

The same is true for Engineering but since Engineering students complete more credits of coursework they are able to take more CS courses if they desire to do so.

Quite a few CS students take Software Project Management because there is no equivalent course in CS. I transferred out of first-year engineering and am currently taking first year CPSC courses. People always ask me why I didn't just go into software engineering, and for me the biggest thing is that it's so closely linked to electrical. Of course I could wait until third year to really focus on software engineering, but I don't want to spend the first two years taking courses that aren't relevant to my interests if I don't have to.

There's also the fact that I got super lucky with my schedule and managed this semester to get into the pre requisite courses I needed to be able to be in second year CS next year, instead of having to have a second first year.
